I remember seeing tweets about this story as it was being published in serial form for Kindle Vella but I never got into Vella and waited until it was compiled into a novel form before adding it to my TBR. I’ve read the first few books in this series and really enjoyed them – The Boyfriend Comeback (book 1) was a particular favorite of mine. I thought this book was fine, it was a quick read and was pretty low angst, but it didn’t quite hook me like the earlier books did. Perhaps something was lost in translation between serial and novel format but I didn’t fully connect with either Rafe or Gunnar. I liked them both well enough but everything just felt very surface-level. I know this wasn’t meant to be some sweeping romance so it didn’t bother me much that it didn’t get too deep. I enjoyed it for what it was, which was a quick and dirty romp with a dash of real romance.
I will say, based on the title and the blurb, it wasn’t totally what I expected. The “deal” and the “lessons” that Rafe offered Gunnar weren’t what I thought they would be. Neither was Gunnar’s response. This book was plenty steamy but I was surprised by how much time they spent pushing each other away vs. exploring all the things Gunnar had on his wishlist. For the amount of time these two actually spent together, the insta-lust turned into insta-love quite quickly. But that only made them push each other away even further since neither one was looking for an actual relationship. Again, it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing (though Rafe’s stubbornness was a little much sometimes) it was just different. Ultimately, I’m glad I read it, and definitely plan on reading the next few books in the series!
