His skin was pink from the cold, and I had the ungodly urge to climb onto his lap—despite my size—and hide my face inside his neck. I had a feeling I’d be safe there. I had a feeling, wrapped in Trent Montgomery’s capable arms, my demons wouldn’t feel quite so close. I’d find my balance.
Trent Montgomery likes to play the field, he doesn’t see himself as the type to settle down and make a family with anyone. When his hot neighbor’s adorable son, Bubba, comes over with his baseball bat and threatens Trent to take his dad out, he knows it’s a bad idea but ends up asking Miles out anyway. It’s fine because he’ll just sabotage the date and it’ll get Bubba off his back. But when Trent sees how much Miles is carrying on his shoulders, he can’t help but want to help out. Their first date may have been a disaster and Miles’ anxiety won’t allow him to even utter a word in front of Trent but that doesn’t stop Trent from doing whatever it takes to help take some of the load from Miles – even if that means turning his heart over to his sweet neighbor and his adorable son.
These two lost boys had me wrapped around their little fingers and they didn’t even know it.
As sweet as Trent and Miles were I just have to say that Bubba Johnson stole the show for me. He was such a cute kid and his schemes to help his daddy were the sweetest. I loved how strong he always tried to be for his dad and the way he ended up having Trent wrapped around his little finger was adorable.
I enjoyed Trent and Miles together too. My heart went out to poor Miles. He struggled with anxiety and with the expectations set upon him by others due to his size. He was a tall, mountain of a man so people always expected him to be the aggressor or to be strong. Living up to those expectations has been detrimental to his mental health. What he truly wanted was someone to take care of him when he needed it.
My outsides had never matched my insides. My body was bigger than I felt I should be, but in that moment, as Trent squeezed me back, his arms snug around my waist, my size didn’t matter.
Spending time with Miles and Bubba awakens something in Trent and when he recognizes the fact that Miles wants help, Trent is more than happy to provide it. Both men have hangups that cause them to have a hard time believing they’d be any good in a relationship but there comes a point where neither can deny the connection they’ve built between them.
This one wasn’t as Christmasy as Let Your Hearts Be Light but it was still a sweet story that tugged at my heartstrings. There were also plenty of funny and steamy moments along the way and of course, I enjoyed seeing a bit more of Paxton and Baxter in this one! I’m also very interested in the setup for Ben’s book which will be coming next!
Trent was sunshine, laughter, and broad shoulders. And he might be strong enough to carry us both.
