“I waited for love, and you came. I will do everything in my power to make you happy for the rest of our days.”
Magnus Sinter is the latest in the long line of immortal beings to fulfill the role of Santa Claus, armed with a special kind of magic he’s responsible for delivering gifts and joy to the world’s people every year. He’s got everything he could ever want, except for a love of his own. For the past several years he’s admired Luca Vincent from afar but he hasn’t made a move beyond a quick greeting on Christmas Eve. Now that he’s approaching his 40th year being Santa, he must find his mate or lose his Christmas magic to his brother – who doesn’t want the job. Magnus is left with two options, marry the awful person the Council has selected for him or finally woo Luca and convince him to give up life as he knows it and return to Magnus’s homeland with him to share his life and Christmas magic for eternity.
I’ve been reading a lot of contemporary holiday romances so it was fun to mix it up with this fantasy holiday romance instead! It’s only a novella but I thought the characters and the lore were very well developed. This story was chock full of literal Christmas magic and I had a lot of fun reading it. It played out like a movie in my mind. For such a short story, a lot was going on! Between Luca slowly losing his holiday cheer to Magnus having to convince Luca to move away from his entire life to be with him and someone trying to sabotage the upcoming holiday – there’s never a dull moment here.
It was easy to get swept up in the magic and whimsy of Magnus’s people and it was also easy to get swept up in the romance of it all. It’s a bit insta-love, despite them watching each other from afar for many years, but that was more than fine with me. It fits with the magical vibes of the whole story. If you’re looking for something to switch up the usual holiday romance, this is a quick and entertaining read to get you in the Christmas spirit!
“You spoil me.”
“You deserve it. You give everything to the world, but who gives to you?”
“I need nothing more than what I have. You are the best gift.”
