The Unlikely Heir by Jax Calder

He’s the Prince of Wales. He will one day be king.

And I’m the prime minister.

We can’t be in a relationship without consequences, consequences that could destroy one or both of us.

Callum Prescott is living in obscurity in California as an insurance call center associate. The fact that he’s like 11th in line to the British throne was information he only whipped out at parties. But when a scandal rocks the Royal Family he’s suddenly being whisked to London as the new heir to the throne. The fact that he’s American, clumsy, and tends to talk too much does little to endear him to the British people.

Just when it seems everyone is against him he finds an unlikely ally in Oliver Hartwell, the enigmatic and handsome Prime Minister. What starts as texting turns into late-night phone calls and secret meetings. Feelings soon blossom between the two men but a relationship between the future king and the current Prime Minister is the definition of forbidden. Is there any way Callum can help his grandmother save the monarchy while still hanging on to the man he loves?

I have no idea why I find Oliver’s asymmetrical smile fascinating, but it appears I want to study it more than anything I’ve studied in my life. Perhaps I should enroll for a Ph.D. in Oliver Hartwell’s Lopsided Grins.

I really enjoyed this one! I think it’s natural to try and compare it to RWRB and while there were a few parallels, this story was completely different. I loved the premise of some random American suddenly being paraded out as the new heir to the British throne. Poor Callum was a fish out of water as he tried to learn royal protocols and the culture of his new country. His adjustment was not without incident but I thought he handled himself so well. All the stuff he had to deal with could have easily broken him but I admired his commitment to his new fate and how he always tried to see the bright side of any given situation. He was so cute with his fun facts, clumsiness, and genuine interest in people. It was really easy to love him as a character.

I loved the slow burn between him and Oliver. Their text exchanges were sweet, funny, and eventually flirty. I loved how Oliver supported Callum and tried to boost him up if he was feeling beaten down by his circumstances. Oliver helped ground Callum and Callum helped Oliver see his world through a new lens. They complemented each other so well. I thought the forbidden aspect of their relationship was very well done. I felt the intense longing between them as they fell further in love but couldn’t see how they’d ever be allowed to have a future. There was a twist that I never expected but I loved how everything played out as a result and the ending was super sweet!

“I was so determined to resist you,” he murmurs into my hair.

I turn slightly, craning my neck so I can see him. “I’m incredibly glad you failed in that mission.”

Oliver’s dark eyes are steady on mine. “I’m glad too.”
