Eight Seconds to Ride by Ashley James

“Man, it’s going to be so fun taking that title from you this year.”

“And I’ll enjoy kicking your tight, sweet ass.” Reaching around, I grab a handful of it before adding, “But don’t worry, I’ll kiss your wounds and tend to your bruised ego afterward. Show what it’s like to be with a real cowboy.”

Shooter Graham is celebrating his latest rodeo world championship win with a quick and dirty hookup in the bathroom of a Las Vegas bar. A few months later he comes face to face with the man from that night and he’s surprised to learn that the man was none other than Sterling Addams – the new guy on the rodeo circuit and the only one with enough talent to possibly dethrone Shooter. To make matters worse, Shooter can’t get their one-night stand out of his head and the more he’s around Sterling, the more he wants it to happen again. Now he’s got to figure out how to defend his title and live up to the lofty expectations set by his father while trying not to lose his heart to his biggest rival.

“Look me in the eye and tell me you don’t think about the night we met constantly. Look me in the eye and tell me that night doesn’t affect you. Because if you’re going to lie to me, you’re sure as hell going to look me in the eye when you do it.”

I love a good rodeo and rivals-to-lovers story, so this book was right up my alley. I live in the Northeast but weirdly enough we used to get rodeos in town from time to time and I loved going when I was a kid. So it was fun to read a book set in that world. Shooter was everything you’d hope for in a cocky, hotshot bronc rider. He was a bit arrogant but had the talent to back it up. However, as soon as we got a peek behind the curtain we saw the immense pressure and anxiety he had to deal with thanks to his father who would accept nothing less than perfection. My heart went out to Shooter with all the expectations he had to deal with.

Sterling was his rival but he also ended up being a bit of an escape for Shooter. Their relationship was tumultuous because they both resisted their connection for a while. But that just made it even sweeter when they finally gave in!

This thing with Sterling, whatever it is, I don’t understand it. At all. I don’t understand this pull I feel to him. I don’t understand the antsy feeling I get in my gut when he isn’t around, or the flutter I feel when he shoots a look at me, or his arm brushes against mine, or he stands up to my smartass behavior.

I loved Sterling. He was the new kid on the block and in many ways, he was shy and awkward but when it came to rodeo, he was confident in his skill and went toe to toe with the best of the best. He gave as good as he got when it came to Shooter and I loved how (even when Shooter wasn’t always the nicest to him) he was so supportive and always looking out for Shooter. They were so good together!

I’m excited that this is the start of a series because I enjoyed the town and all the side characters and I’m looking forward to reading more about them!

Somehow, I know I can trust him. And somehow I know he isn’t just my opponent anymore. Somewhere along the way, without me even fully realizing it, Sterling has become more than that.
