To Catch a Firefly by Emmy Sanders

“If you ever decide to love someone,” he says slowly, “they’ll be very lucky.”

He already is.

This is going to be a tough book to write a review for because it was basically perfect and nothing I say will be able to capture just how beautiful this story was. I’d seen this book hyped up for weeks and I can say with absolute certainty that it lives up to the hype. This was the first book I’ve read from Emmy Sanders and it won’t be my last. The writing was just gorgeous, and Lucky and Ellis’s story will stick with me for a long time.

“But we’re not done,” he says vehemently, stepping into my space. “We’ll never be done. Me and you, we don’t have an ending.”

Lucky and Ellis met when they were 10 years old when Lucky’s family moved in next door to Ellis. They quickly became inseparable but Lucky’s always known he wanted to get out of their quiet town someday. As they get older, their bond only grows but the day finally comes when Lucky flies away. Life may take them in different directions but they always circle back to one another.

I was ten years old when I met Lucky. I knew it then, and I know it now. He’s a firefly. Luminous and wild. He was never meant to be trapped. Not here and not with me.

The bond between these two men was so beautifully written. The way Lucky understood and accepted Ellis from the start – just perfection. No matter what happened between them, I was never worried about their bond. Some things just are – the sky is blue, the grass is green, and Lucky and Ellis were meant to be in each other’s lives forever.

I don’t ever want to lose… the place I have in your world.”

I don’t often cry when reading but my heart was just so full as I read this story that around the 80% mark it started to spill over and I read the final 20% with tears streaming down my face. It was so romantic, full of so much longing and pining, and soul-deep love. And there were just so many little details that enhanced the beauty of this story – the emails, the glasswork, and the blue boutonnieres, to name a few. Honestly, this book was as close to perfect as you can get. Please don’t miss out on this gorgeous love story, grab a copy today!

With the moon lending its soft glow through the window, Lucky falls asleep.

And I learn what it is to cradle a firefly in my palms.
