I see how much he cares about animals, clients, and his friends. I see how hard he works, how many extra hours he puts in. And I see the way he looks at me. There’s a depth to it that makes me feel like he’s not just looking at me—he’s trying to see me.
Veterinarian, Noah, is 34 years old and is tired of having his heart broken. His friends convince him that there’s no harm in having a one-night stand, if he follows the rules, no hearts can be broken. Too bad he breaks at least one of the rules the night he hooks up with Haze. Another rule is broken when, several months later, Haze turns up as the new receptionist at the vet clinic Noah works for. There’s something about Haze that makes Noah want more and more. The more they’re around each other, it doesn’t take long for the final two rules to go out the window too. Now all Noah can do is hope that Haze won’t be another man to leave and break his heart.
“I think you should come with a warning,” I quip.
“Oh, yeah. And what kind of warning would that be?”
I think about it for a moment. “The warning would read, Caution: One time is never enough.”
How cute was this story? This was the first book I’ve read from Casey Cox so I had no idea what to expect but it ended up being a delight. Noah and Haze were both total sweethearts and were just adorable together. It was clear from their first night together that they failed spectacularly at having a one-night stand. They just liked each other way too much for that to be the end. But Haze was headed out of town for several months so whether they liked it or not the likelihood they’d see each other again was very low. I loved how shocked they were when they saw each other at the clinic. It didn’t take them long to pick up where they left off. It was super sweet and quite spicy. I also shed a few unexpected tears toward the end!
Two things I loved in this book were the explicit consent and terrific aftercare. Noah was so touched by the way Haze made sure to check in and make sure what they were doing was okay and I thought it was very sexy.
I also loved all the animal shenanigans and the found family aspect with all the other Vet Shop Boys. There are quite a few books in this series and this one set the stage and made me want to continue in the series!
