If Sutton left, my whole life would be derailed. I wasn’t sure I’d still be tethered to the earth, just wandering and trying to find the place I belonged, when I already knew it was with him.
Jasper and Sutton have been friends their entire lives. They work together, live together, and are inseparable. But lately, Sutton’s been feeling things toward Jasper that go beyond friendship which he doesn’t think Jasper could ever return. This causes Sutton to begin pulling away to preserve his heart. When confronted with the truth, Jasper realizes what he feels for Sutton is also love but he’s not sure how they could be together without Jasper losing his family – who have made their views on same-sex relationships very clear over the years.
Sutton, my best friend my whole life.
Sutton, the man who meant more to me than anyone in the whole damn world.
Sutton, the man I was in love with.
The man. I was. In love with.
I thought this was a sweet friends-to-lovers story. There was never any doubt in my mind that Jasper and Sutton were meant for one another. The early parts of the story were a little sad, with Sutton thinking he was the only one with those feelings and Jasper panicking thinking he was losing Sutton. But once they got on the same page, it was adorable seeing them figure everything out together. Jasper had a lot of stuff to work through thanks to the beliefs that had been instilled in him from his family his entire life. Sutton was much more comfortable with it all and was very patient while Jasper worked it out. Even with all the angst, I was confident that a love like theirs would prevail.
I didn’t understand it, how he did this to me, how anyone could look at us and see anything wrong with it.
In the first book of the series, we saw a bit of the town’s mentality regarding people who were different but it was amplified in this one – with the prejudice coming from the townspeople and Jasper’s own family. It was sad seeing how Jasper’s family reacted, even if it wasn’t surprising. But I loved the way Jasper fought for himself and his relationship with Sutton. We also saw more of Sam and Emerson, I loved seeing them so happy, and I loved how Sam and Jasper’s relationship evolved throughout this story.
“Do you feel it? Like the whole world ain’t right if we’re not together?”
“I feel it. Christ, I feel it.”
