The Hookup Mix-up by Riley Hart

“Stupid puppies,” he mumbles.

“Puppy?”

“You. You’re like a golden retriever puppy. Sweet, lovable, goofy. It’s impossible not to like you.”

Could this book have been any cuter? Seriously. Theo and Perry had me grinning from the first few chapters and I couldn’t put it down. I loved their meet-cute. Theo was so oblivious to the fact that Perry was hitting on him – to be fair, Theo was quite inebriated at the time, but I’m not sure he would have realized if he were sober either. It was hilarious when Theo did realize it the next day though. Quite the mix-up!

“You’re basically irresistible, Puppy. And the fact that you don’t know you’re adorable and irresistible makes you more adorable and irresistible. It’s fucking with my head.”

I adored the friendship these two developed. The embarrassment of the mix-up and the near kiss could have easily squashed things between them but they didn’t let that stop them. They were so cute with their banter and texting. They became fast friends and I love how they found themselves opening up to each other in ways they usually didn’t with anyone else. Theo had a lot of pressure on his shoulders to succeed at school but he struggled with it, which affected his self-esteem. But Perry was so great at helping him overcome a lot of that. Perry faced abandonment issues stemming from his father not being in his life and therefore kept everyone an arm’s length away so they couldn’t hurt him. But Theo easily worked his way through Perry’s defenses and it wasn’t long before they were both catching feelings.

“We’re very shmoopy,” he says with a grin.

I chuckle. “We’re so fucking shmoopy. Literally the shmoopiest.”

Theo’s bi-awakening was great – I believe he even declared it the best bi-awakening ever at one point. He was adorably clueless but so eager to please. He really was like a puppy. Seeing these two guys explore Theo’s newly discovered sexuality together was very sweet and very hot. And for two college-aged guys, they were quite mature. I appreciated how well they communicated and the fact that their foundation was so solid, that I knew they’d be able to handle whatever was thrown at them. This was such a great way to kick off the new season of FU and I can’t wait to read the others!

“I never expected a hookup mix-up to be the best thing that ever happened to me, but it was.”
