Level Up by Max Walker

This guy was hot, had sexy biceps and a friendly smile, and he played video games? He had to be some kind of trap.

When Jay Cruz is forced to leave his previous school over a protest gone bad, he moves across the country to finish his last semester at Franklin U. Despite how things ended at his last school he still wants to fight for the environment. Too bad his new roommate is none other than Ryan Redpine, son of the CEO of a company whose sole mission is to destroy the environment. Jay hates Ryan on principle but as they spend time together, Jay realizes that Ryan may not be as bad as he thinks. As their relationship grows, Ryan fears he may lose Jay when he has to tell him that his father is one of the backers of the oil drilling that Jay and his friends are trying to stop.

“I’m going to prove to you that I’m not some evil villain. You’ll see.”

Jay paused at the door. He had a hand on the handle when he looked over his shoulder. “I already know you’re not a villain, Ry. Just prove to me you’re not a prince either.”

I liked the premise of this one. The two guys hit it off when they briefly met at a frat party but then when Jay learns who Ryan’s family is, he’s torn between sticking to his morals and getting involved with the cute guy he’s attracted to. I did think that Jay judged Ryan a little harshly at the beginning. He hated him simply because of who his father was, instantly assuming Ryan shared the same values. But Ryan was a good guy and just because his dad did awful things didn’t necessarily mean that he wanted to follow in his footsteps. Luckily, Jay does begin to see this pretty quickly.

Damn it. What kind of spell did Ryan cast on me? Because that really had to be the only explanation as to why I was ready to throw away all of my carefully curated morals so I could hop on his lap.

There were some funny moments that I enjoyed and I thought that Jay and Ryan ended up being sweet together. I would have liked a little more buildup to their relationship, though. I liked their friend group a lot, how Ryan’s best friend and Jay’s best friend all became friends. And we even had a few cameos from past and future FU characters. I thought the epilogue was very sweet too, I liked getting a glimpse into their future!

“With you, it’s like I can forget about all the chaos in the world and… just be.”
