“This is me going after what I deserve. This is me finally writing my own happy ending.”
Jamie Morin has a lot on his plate between working toward his degree, his library job on campus, and having to constantly run back home every time a crisis happens on his family’s dairy farm. But that doesn’t stop him from joining the new romance bookclub at his favorite bookstore where he looks forward to discussing his favorite romance novels every week. This is where he meets Briar Nord, bookstore clerk and co-founder of the book club. The two hit it off immediately and start spending any free time together as friends but even if they wanted more, Jamie’s many obligations and demons from Briar’s past may stand in the way of them finding a happily ever after like the ones they read about in their favorite books.
Jamie and Briar were very sweet together, I loved watching their friendship blossom and then grow into romance. These young men were dealing with a lot in their personal lives. Jamie had a lot of pressure on his shoulders, trying to finish school so he could pursue his dreams while still trying to help his family keep their dairy farm afloat. He didn’t want to let anyone down and as a result, he spread himself very thin. Which is why it was so nice seeing him take something for himself – the time he stole away to spend with Briar.
Briar wasn’t used to having good things in his life. He didn’t have the easiest time growing up and came to Burlington for a fresh start and even though everyone was kind and welcoming to him, a big part of him still felt like he didn’t deserve to be there. As he begins to fall for Jamie, he thinks maybe he can finally have something good in his life, something that lasts. But then his past comes knocking on his door and threatens to ruin everything good he’s found.
My heart went out to both of these guys. I wanted Jamie to find a way to figure out a way to make the space to pursue his interests and I wanted Briar to be able to get out from under his past once and for all. And I wanted them both to find a way to be together because they were so good for one another. It wasn’t an easy road for them, things got particularly dicey toward the end but it kept things exciting and I was sucked into the story and I loved how everything turned out!
I listened to this one on audio and enjoyed it. Tim Paige and Cooper North did a great job bringing these characters to life. They are 2 of my go-to narrators and they certainly didn’t disappoint!
