The Art of Catching Feelings by Alicia Thompson

Daphne Brink wasn’t in the best headspace sitting at a baseball game days after signing her divorce papers, leading to her getting very drunk and joining in with another fan to heckle the players. She’s horrified when her heckles wind up making the team’s third baseman, Chris Kepler, cry. She reaches out after the game on social media to apologize but accidentally leaves out the fact that she’s his heckler. Chris, thinking it’s just a kind fan reaching out, ends up replying and the two hit it off right away and message back and forth for weeks. Daphne knows she needs to come clean about being the heckler but then she starts working for the team and has to interact with Chris in real life. This complicates things because Chris is falling for Duckie, the woman he’s been messaging, but he also starts to like Daphne without realizing they’re the same person. Can Chris find it in him to forgive Daphne when the truth finally comes out?

I picked this up on a whim during a recent trip to the bookstore. The cover drew me in and the blurb – a professional baseball player falling for his heckler – sounded fun! And it was! Daphne sure got herself into a pickle with the whole Duckie situation. It was one of those things where the moment to be truthful without causing much damage had passed and then with every passing day it just became more and more complicated until she couldn’t figure a way out of it without breaking both of their hearts.

Daphne was a sweet person but she didn’t always make the smartest decisions. I felt bad for her when things kept spiraling out of control. She really did care for Chris and never meant to hurt him. The fact that she struggled so much with telling him or not telling him helped me not get too frustrated with her. It’s not like she got a kick out of accidentally catfishing the poor guy.

Chris was such an amazing guy. He had been dealing with some pretty heavy stuff and Daphne’s comment at the game that day just pushed him over the edge. But it was nice seeing him open up to Duckie as they messaged. The poor guy just wanted to meet the woman he was falling for and couldn’t understand why she kept pushing him off. And then he was confused some more when he started getting involved with Daphne and she was cagey about seemingly benign things (like giving him her phone number). I hated seeing him hurt but I loved how it all turned out, the ending was just the sweetest!
