Maybe You by Briar Prescott

On paper, this dude is off-putting. In real life… he’s sort of entertaining.

Well, this was another gem from Briar Prescott! I’ve loved every book in this series and this latest addition was no exception. I was hooked from the start and had a hard time putting it down. No one and I mean no one, writes banter quite like Briar Prescott does. It’s so clever and funny and it makes it impossible to not love her characters. From Wren and Sutton’s very first meeting, the banter was top tier and it continued throughout. I loved both characters so much. The book is told almost exclusively from Wren’s POV and I thought it totally worked because Sutton was a bit of an enigma and not having his POV helped keep up the allure and kept me wondering what his deal was. Plus Wren was a wonderful character so it was no hardship to be in his head for about 95% of the book!

… the problem with hiding is that nobody will see you.

And I think…

I think, after all these years of hiding, I might finally want to be seen again.

Wren was such a good guy who hasn’t always had an easy road. Things are mostly good now but he still keeps to himself. I won’t say why he’s hiding because I don’t want to spoil it but he’s finally starting to feel like maybe he wants to put himself out there again. It just so happens that this revelation comes about around the time Sutton Holland enters his life. Sutton is rich, aloof, and insists he’s about as deep as a puddle. He’s also a shameless flirt and makes it no secret he’s attracted to Wren. At first, Wren resists but then he gets to know Sutton better and starts to suspect there’s more to him than he lets on and he’s curious to learn more. He also thinks that hooking up with someone as brutally honest as Sutton is just what he needs if he’s going to get over his hangups. Sutton is more than happy to help but his only stipulation is that Wren can’t fall in love with him. And I’m sure you can guess how well that plan goes.

I know that with each passing day, I’m falling more hopelessly in love with him.

The only thing I don’t know is if there’s even a remote possibility that he feels the same.

I loved their meet-cute and how Sutton kept showing up. There was no doubt he was going to wear Wren down eventually. Sutton claimed he didn’t do relationships and was shallow and didn’t care about anything but then his actions told a very different story. He was so sweet and was so good with Wren. He would absolutely deny this but he cherished Wren and it was so beautiful. I mean, if his goal was to not let Wren fall in love with him, he was pretty bad at doing anything to prevent it. I laughed and swooned and even got choked up a few times. They were so good together. But then I found out why Sutton was so insistent Wren couldn’t love him and my heart just broke. There’s a fair deal of angst in the last quarter of the book, so be prepared! Don’t worry, though, it’s all worth it in the end!
