The History Between Us by Ashley James

Part of me wants to push him to see if he’ll acknowledge the history between us or if he’s going to keep pretending like it never happened.

One drunken night out, two years ago, William Andino landed in bed with the one man he absolutely should not be there with – Colt Bishop, his best friend’s son. Fortunately, with William living in Seattle and Colt in Copper Lake, he hasn’t had to cross paths with Colt. But when William’s father retires, he decides to move home to take over the family practice and quickly comes face to face with the man who he hasn’t been able to forget about. Colt is off limits and it should be easy to keep his distance but Colt’s endless flirting and goading makes it hard for William to stick to his resolve – even if giving in might cost him his relationship with his best friend. But it may be worth the risk if it means he gets Colt in the end.

This is William Andino… my father’s best friend. The man I’ve found attractive since I was old enough to even understand what that meant.

“Dad’s best friend” isn’t a go-to trope for me but I enjoyed this book. Colt was kind of a brat and a shameless flirt, loving to antagonize William once he learns he’s back in town. William did a pretty decent job, at first, resisting Colt but he’s only human and he eventually gives in. But even as he starts messing around with Colt again, he still struggles with the moral dilemma of sleeping with his best friend’s son. Sure Colt is an adult now, but William is still nearly twice as old as him and was there when Colt was born. I can see how that would mess with his head a bit. There’s also the fear of how Colt’s father would react if he found out. He had a lot of reasons to try and push Colt away.

Tonight, I’m taking what I want, indulging in the history between us, and it’s going to feel damn good doing it.

Colt and William had great chemistry in the bedroom and I’m not super sure what initially drew them together beyond that but once they were together, they were sweet. I really liked Colt’s relationship with William’s father, it was cute seeing them grow closer and how they would gang up on William. There were a few great moments with Shooter too, I love that guy! And I also enjoyed Colt’s journey dealing with his injury and all the uncertainty surrounding that. It gave his character depth beyond just being a flirtatious guy looking to get into William’s pants again.

Anyway, it was nice being back with the Copper Lake crew and I’m very much looking forward to Whit and Conrad’s book!

“I can’t get enough of you. Even when I know I should stay away, I can’t. I don’t want to.”
