Sweet Like Whiskey by Emmy Sanders

I think grumpy Jackson Darling might just have a heart of gold.

This book was the sweetest, fluffiest, heartwarming grumpy/sunshine romance. It was super low angst and sometimes that’s just what you need. I loved this new small town we’re introduced to in this book. I can tell I’m going to enjoy my time here throughout the series. This first book focused on the second oldest Darling brother, Jackson. He’s hard working and loyal to his family and their ranch but thanks to a heartbreak in his past, he’s kept his heart closed off the last few years. But then one day, sunshine in the form of Ash Alcott comes to town and shakes up Jackson’s whole world.

Ash truly was sunshine personified and had a heart of gold. From his first days in Darling, Montana, he was kind and thoughtful and it was easy to see why everyone in town welcomed him into the fold. I loved how he saw beneath Jackson’s prickly exterior right from the start. He was flirty and persistent in his pursuit of Jackson. I appreciated that both characters were mature and didn’t play any games. Ash made his intentions clear and let Jackson decide what he wanted to do about it. Fortunately, Jackson wasn’t able to resist Ash for too long.

I came here looking for something new, didn’t I? A fresh start. An adventure.

Well, Jackson Darling could certainly be all that.

It made me giddy every time Ash chipped away another piece of Jackson’s walls. Jackson had a big heart hidden away and it was lovely seeing him begin to open it up to Ash. When they finally got together, the romance was full of swoon and the spice was delicious (I’ll be thinking about that hayloft scene for a long time). I can’t stress enough how low angst this book was. Instead of drama, it was full of cozy moments on the ranch and I wasn’t mad about it. I think some of the future books in the series might bring the angst but I thought Jackson and Ash both deserved an easy path for a change and I very much enjoyed seeing them find their HEA. And I look forward to returning to Darling, Montana in future books!

“You are my sun, Ash,” I tell him seriously. “My sunshine. My good thing ahead. Thank you for chasing me, even when I was being a stubborn ass about it.”
