I had built defenses—sturdy ones—over the years that made me immune to threats and manipulation, but damn if they were any match for Chris’s sweetness. He was so small. So warm. So infuriatingly stubborn, and stubbornly cheerful, and cheerfully infuriating.
Reed Sunday expected his newest assignment to be straightforward; all he had to do was get his target to a safe house and lay low until the target’s mafia uncle testified. But he could never have prepared himself for the experience that was Chris Winowski. The adorable, sweet man who had no idea about his uncle’s nefarious dealings and who was too trusting for his own good. Their plans to lay low in the safe house quickly go sideways, and instead they find themselves pretending to be honeymooners and volunteering to fix up an old campground in the small town of Copper County, NY. Reed knows he shouldn’t get involved with his protectee, but the longer they’re playing pretend in Copper County, the more helpless he becomes against Chris’s charms. And when danger finally finds them, Reed’s determination to protect Chris has nothing to do with his job and everything to do with the fact that he’s fallen hopelessly in love with him.
The way Chris pulled at me was like gravity. You could fight it—and I’d tried—but it was a losing battle when your body knew exactly where it needed to be.
This book was an unexpected delight. I enjoyed it so much! A big reason for that was Chris. I understood why Reed fell for him as hard as he did because I fell in love with the guy, too. He was naive and so innocent, but he was also very smart and capable, and he had the biggest heart and always saw the best in people. At one point, Reed likened him to an angel here on Earth, and honestly, that’s the perfect way to describe Chris. He was just so precious and too good for this world.
It was a little sad how sheltered he had been and how much he held himself back for most of his life. Which made it so wonderful to see the way he blossomed during their time in Copper County. Everyone was instantly drawn to him, and anyone who met him loved him. It warmed my heart to see him really come into his own over the course of the book. I loved him so much!
“I wanted you from the minute you got in my car, smelling like vanilla and lime.” He pressed his forehead to mine, and his hands traced down my arms so he could link our fingers together. “I couldn’t keep my eyes off you. I could barely keep my hands off you. I see you, Chris. Right now, you’re all I see.”
I loved seeing Chris worm his way past Reed’s defenses. The early parts of the book were so funny as each man had a different understanding of what was happening. Reed honestly had no idea what to do with someone like Chris, but it didn’t take long for him to truly see to the heart of him. Which in turn made his protective instincts even stronger. The romance was a bit of a slow burn, but I loved seeing these two fall in love. It was just so sweet. I loved the epilogue and the bonus scene too. The whole story was funny, sweet, swoony, and even a little suspenseful. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
“Never stop being exactly the way you are. I want you to fly like a butterfly. And I promise I’m strong enough to handle the lifts and throws.”
