Henry Aster has been unlucky in love, and one day, he makes a wish to find his perfect man. He never expected the wish would be granted, but the next day, when he turns up at the vintage store he manages, he’s shocked to find that one of the mannequins he’s used in the window displays at the shop since he was a kid has come to life. Now, the mannequin, who takes the name Aidan, must experience real human love before New Year’s Eve or he’ll become a mannequin once more. Henry’s only got 4 weeks to teach Aidan everything he needs to know about being human and maybe falling in love.
This was a fun, charming, and magical holiday romance. The premise was a lot of fun. Aidan was a delight. He had so much to learn about being human, and his childlike wonder and innocence were so endearing. He took things so literally, and it was very amusing to see him pick up so many “life lessons” from his TV watching marathons. The chapters from his POV were so fun to read. I really loved his character.
Henry obviously had a lot more baggage, as humans tend to have, and it was even more pronounced when put next to someone like Aidan. It was cute seeing him trying to teach Aidan how to be human, and it was sweet how their relationship progressed over those few weeks. It was playing out like the perfect holiday romcom. But then things got fairly angsty and even a little sad for a while there. I think what happened was necessary for their character arcs. But I wish that maybe a little more time had been spent on this chunk and perhaps adding an epilogue, because while I was happy with how things turned out, it felt a little rushed.
All in all, though, this was a pleasant read and gave me a little burst of early holiday spirit.
