One Week to Win the Chocolate Maker by Timothy Janovsky

I thought this was really sweet. The concept may have been a little far-fetched, but the escapism was welcome, and I enjoyed seeing how it all played out. The concept is a riff on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but instead of a boy winning a golden ticket, Charlie’s an adult who wins a chance to woo the heir to an Italian chocolate empire. Dario must marry before his next birthday to inherit his late grandfather’s company. If Charlie can win, he hopes marrying into the Amorina fortune will help save his family’s home.

The competition aspect introduced us to a cast of quirky characters that added a touch of drama. Dario and Charlie had chemistry right from the start, though. Dario tried to engage with the other contestants, but he kept being drawn toward Charlie. The two were very sweet together, and I enjoyed seeing them grow closer.

I thought the handling of Dario’s agoraphobia was well done, and I loved how Charlie helped him with it. Charlie was a really good guy, from the way he loved and wanted to support his family to how he was so understanding with Dario.

Even though I had to suspend disbelief a bit (particularly with how perfectly timed Dario’s nonno’s letters were), it was still a fun read and would be perfect for anyone looking for a little escape!
