The Last Buzzer by J.J. Mulder

This was so sweet! Jack and Desmond were so cute together. Poor Jack was riddled with anxiety, and playing hockey only made it worse. It got so bad that he hated having to play. But the new assistant coach, Desmond, is the only thing that helps settle him. Jack’s negative self-talk and anxiety spirals were sad to read. But it was nice seeing how being around Desmond (and of course, Nate, Jack’s best friend from the previous book) gave him the comfort that he never had growing up. I was happy to see so much of Nate in this book; his and Jack’s friendship was so great!

For Desmond’s part, he found himself with custody of his 9-year-old nephew after a tragic accident and is trying to help his nephew, Parker, through losing his parents, while also trying to figure out this whole parenting thing. He also had to deal with his own awful parents, who didn’t think he should have custody of Parker. He was dealing with a lot, but Jack was a bright spot for Desmond, too. Their friendship was very sweet. I loved how much Parker liked Jack, too.

I liked how things played out, which cleared the way for these two to start dating. It was all so cute and wholesome. Both guys were ace-spec, and I loved the rep. I could relate to both of them. Oftentimes, it seems that ace characters are written as almost childish, but I didn’t feel that was the case here, and I really appreciated that.

The epilogue was super sweet, and I enjoyed the bonus scene from Parker’s POV too! I’m sad to see this series end, but this book was a lovely way to wrap it up!
