Stick Around by E.M. Lindsey

“I feel like I’m falling apart, and the only time I’ve been able to keep myself together is on the ice and in your arms.”

I’ve been looking forward to this spin-off series because I loved Jonah (and his brother, Micah) in the original Punk as Puck series. My heart went out to Jonah in this one. He had a lot dumped at his feet by his horrible mother, and he was really struggling to figure out what to do. Fortunately, the wonderful found family of all the other Punk as Puck guys were there and didn’t hesitate to jump right in. And his situation also caused him to cross paths with Alexio Zeki and his brother Nikos. Alexio was less than kind when they first met and judged Jonah unfairly, but the more he learned about the kind of person Jonah was, the hate started to shift to something else.

I had a hard time with Alexio at first. I get why he’d form that initial opinion of Jonah, but I felt like he wouldn’t take a step back and listen to what Jonah was trying to tell him. He got there eventually, but for a while there, I wasn’t sure if he would ever win me over. By the end, though, I liked him and thought he and Jonah were sweet together. I wish we had gotten a little more backstory about Alexio. I feel like Jonah’s character was fully developed, but Alexio’s character was a little less so. I did love Alexio’s brother, Nikos, though. He was a good guy and did a lot to help Jonah when he really didn’t have to.

This book was marketed as a rom-com, but I wouldn’t classify it as that. It dealt with some pretty heavy topics, and there was way too much animosity for it to be a light rom-com. But there was some comic relief in the form of Vanya, Alexio’s teammate. I loved that character so much and was thrilled to learn he’ll be one of the MCs in the next book.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and was happy to return to this world. If you enjoyed the Punk as Puck series, you’re sure to like this, and you’ll see the whole crew from that series throughout.
