His whole life was reoriented toward Jack.
Who would have thought his world would be remade by this man with a goofy smile and stunning blue eyes?
I’m laughing at my former self who thought that book 1 in this series was super suspenseful. That book was a walk in the park compared to this one! There was very little downtime, it was flat-out for almost the entire novel. Be sure to wait until you’ve got enough time to dedicate to reading before you start this one because you won’t be able to put it down. Tal Bauer took the suspense and danger he started in Enemies of the State and cranked it to eleven. I’m reading this series as a group read with some friends and our group chat has been insane with everyone freaking out over the things that go down during this one. Experiencing the craziness with others has made the experience even more fun!
There’s not a whole lot I can say because you’ll want to go into this as blind as you can. There are so many twists and turns, it would be a shame to spoil anything! A few of the things I guessed before they happened but there were several things I never saw coming and they blew my mind. The suspense and action are heart-pounding and never let up. There is so much at play here, the book alternates between several points of view. We got way more than just Ethan and Jack here, and I really enjoyed that. The threat to all humanity is insane, General Madigan is truly a madman. It’s hard for my brain to comprehend the level of evilness that would drive someone to these lengths. It’s terrifying and I have a feeling that things are only going to get worse in book 3 before they get better. As it was, the ending of this one made me want to throw my Kindle.
If you’re here for the romance, we do get some, so don’t fret. But you’re going to have to work for it. Jack and Ethan’s relationship is truly put to the test here. I love their love so much, though. It’s really a beautiful connection between these men, which is good because they need to draw from that to survive some of the things thrown their way. Outside of Jack and Ethan, I enjoyed seeing Jack and Sergey’s friendship develop further. It was such an unlikely friendship at the start but there were a lot of great scenes between them here. There are also some love stories simmering between some of the side characters, which I enjoyed seeing as well.
Ok, I’m stopping here, I can’t say much more without giving something away. If you are a fan of romantic suspense and/or political thrillers, you should definitely check this series out. Meanwhile, I’m going to go read book 3 to see if Jack, Ethan, and company can successfully save the world!
“Ethan,” he whispered. “I’m with you all the way.”
