The Sunny Side by Lily Morton

I’m breaking all my rules for Dean, and I can’t stop this runaway train no matter how fast it’s going.

Jonas Durand owns a prestigious modeling agency and has dedicated his life to ensuring it runs smoothly. He’s known for his control and serious demeanor, but he’s also fair and well-respected by his models. Dean Jacobs is one of his most popular and successful models. Jonas has always been attracted to Dean but for a number of reasons has kept that attraction locked up tight. However, a series of events keeps putting them together and Jonas’s defenses start to crumble the longer he’s exposed to Dean’s kindness and sunny disposition. Dean makes Jonas feel free in a way he’s never allowed himself to be before and he finds it as thrilling as he does terrifying. But as their feelings deepen, will Jonas allow the fear or the excitement to win out in the end?

“He’s changed everything. Like I’m a colouring book, and he’s filling in the spaces.”

I thought this story was really sweet. I’m not at all familiar with the world of modeling so it was kind of cool to be immersed in an unfamiliar world. Most of the story was told from Jonas’s POV, he was very serious and uptight at the start but I enjoyed seeing him unravel a bit as he took up with Dean. He fought the good fight, trying to keep up their professional relationship but he’s only human, it was only a matter of time before Dean’s charms won out.

I absolutely loved Dean, he truly was a ball of sunshine, which was admirable considering all the experiences in his past that could have easily broken him down. He had such a simplistic and pure outlook on life and was a truly kind human being. It made me sad that he often had such a low opinion of himself, though it was understandable after years of people assuming he was just a vapid model. But he was so much more than that. I liked the way Jonas worked to show Dean his worth. The two balanced each other well and looked after one another in a way that satisfied their individual desires to care for people. They were very sweet together.

There was a bit of angst at the end, and I was pretty mad with Jonas at one point but I think he made up for his behavior satisfactorily by the end and I loved the epilogue. This was the first book I’ve read from Lily Morton but I definitely want to go back and read the books about some of the side characters in this one and I need to read the second book in this series because Pip was such a fun character in this one!

…he’s drawn me out of the shadows to walk on his sunny side of the street. It’s a wonderful place to be.
