The Entanglement of Rival Wizards by Sara Raasch

“I need to get this out of my system before you drive us anywhere,” I whisper against his skin.

He shivers, hands going down to grab my ass. “I don’t know about you, but I’ve stopped believing there’s a way to get this out of my system at all. I’m pretty sure you are my system now.”

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book! I went in with lower expectations because I had read one of this author’s other books, which I had high expectations for, and, while I did like it, it had fallen short of the hype for me. But this book completely exceeded my expectations, and I ended up loving it!

I wasn’t really in the mood for a complicated fantasy book at the moment, so I was a little hesitant going in. But this was chosen for my book club, so I picked it up anyway and was happy to see that it was very accessible to someone who doesn’t typically read this genre. It had fantasy elements, but they were easy to follow, and the world-building wasn’t complicated. A lot of the time, it read like a contemporary romance, and Sebastian and Elethior could have easily been regular grad students working together on a science project instead of a magic project. I thought there were enough magical/fantasy elements to keep fans of the genre happy while allowing an average reader to still enjoy the story.

The rivals-to-lovers aspect was done so well. I loved the banter between Sebastian and Thio and how all that fiery energy eventually turned into passion. The romance was very swoony, and the book was hot. These two had excellent chemistry, and I loved how they helped and supported one another. Sebastian had a complicated connection with Thio’s family, and it turned out that Thio also had a complicated relationship with his own family. I liked seeing how they worked through all that. Some of the topics were a little heavy, but they were handled with care, and I enjoyed seeing how everything turned out.

I’m looking forward to Orok’s story now! He was a great side character in this one. I loved his friendship with Sebastian. Those two went through the unimaginable together and are forever bonded because of it. I’m curious to see his side of things, and I also hope to see more of Sebastian and Thio in that one!

I don’t want to look back anymore.
I want to, am able to, look forward now.
And the only thing ahead of me is him.
