Review

This book was so different than anything I’ve read from Lauren Blakely but it was such a good read. The story is set in Paris so the romance is basically guaranteed and Julien and Clio’s romance was wonderful but my favorite part was the magic of it all. Muses, art coming to life, ancient curses, it was enchanting and swept me up in the wonder of it all.

Imagine art coming to life, Degas’ ballerinas performing in the halls of the Musée d’Orsay, Manet’s black cat winding through your legs. It’s certainly unusual but for intern Julien Garnier, it’s just another night at the museum. Until a beautiful and mysterious woman emerges from a lost Renoir that’s recently been installed there. He’s instantly drawn to her and they spend their evenings meandering through the galleries and the paintings within as they fall in love. But they soon find themselves in the center of a mystery involving curses, forgers, possible ghosts, and an unexplained sickness that seems to be spreading to works of art all over the world. Julien may be the only one to stop it but in doing so he may end up losing everything.

I enjoyed the mystery woven throughout the story. Trying to figure out what was happening to the paintings kept me guessing even while being in awe of what was happening. The story centers around Julien and Clio but there was a great cast of supporting characters who all play important roles in figuring everything out and setting it right again. It reminded me of the show White Collar, only magical. I kept waiting for Neal Caffrey to pop up with all the talk of art forgers in Paris! Anyway, I digress… This book was unlike anything else I’ve read but it was a welcome departure from the standard contemporary romance and I look forward to future books set in this series!
