When it comes to Hawke, it’s not even an active choice, because he’s barely stepped foot back in town, and I’m already falling back into that place where nothing else exists outside of us.
Saxon James did something really special with this book. I’m always a fan of her writing, but this might be her best work yet. The prologue starts with a bombshell reveal, and I was immediately invested. The second-chance love story for Jensen and Tai was great, but even better than that was seeing Jensen try to build a relationship with Kasen, the teenage son he never knew existed. Between that and all the parts with Tai and his father, this book tugged at every one of my heartstrings. I loved all these characters and going on this journey with them.
Kasen’s character was so well written. He’s a 14-year-old boy who just suffered an unthinkable loss and suddenly has the father he always assumed had abandoned him looking for a place in his life. It’s no wonder he was surly and not exactly welcoming to Jensen. The early parts of the book were rough for them, but seeing their relationship build and evolve as the story went on was so heartwarming.
And I loved seeing Jensen and Tai repair their relationship. They both had a lot going on in their lives, and they could use someone in their corner. I loved seeing how Tai fit into the picture regarding Jensen and Kasen. And having Jensen be there to support Tai as he continued to deal with everything with his dad was great. Tai had been handling things on his own for so long. His overwhelm and shame about how bad things had gotten really came through and made my heart hurt for him. I was glad he finally had someone to lean on.
A lot of this book was an emotional roller coaster, but the romance was so sweet and relatively low-angst. I loved seeing Tai and Jensen rekindle their friendship and finally give in to the attraction that had always simmered between them. They were perfect together, and I loved seeing them work together to build a future. Their 10-year separation only made them appreciate what they had now even more. Everything worked out so perfectly, and the epilogue brought tears to my eyes.
