I’ve wanted to dive into the Hazardverse for a while, and here I am! I really enjoyed the book; the mystery was interesting with lots of unexpected twists, and I thought Hazard and Somers were wonderfully complex characters who I’m excited to keep learning more about.
After losing his job in St. Louis, detective Emery Hazard moves back to his hometown to take a detective job there. To say Hazard has a complicated relationship with his hometown is an understatement. The things he endured as a teenager because he was gay were truly horrible. As it turns out, John-Henry Somerset, one of his teenage bullies, is his new partner. It was quite the juxtaposition to hear about the ways Somers tormented Hazard in high school and to see what a decent guy he was now. Their dynamic was so compelling, especially factoring in the sexual tension that simmered between them. There were a lot of ups and downs along the way, and I think it’s going to be very interesting to see how the relationship between these two continues to grow and evolve. We’re certainly a long way off from any sort of happily ever after for these guys!
I was also totally sucked into the mystery they were trying to solve. I’m no good at actually figuring these things out as I’m reading, but it’s always fun going along for the ride. There were many twists and turns, and we were introduced to some interesting characters along the way. There are heavy topics present in this book, and the author doesn’t shy away from any of it.
I enjoyed this introduction to the Hazardverse, and I’m excited to continue the journey!
