Wow, this book was so good! I was in the mood for something angsty, and this book delivered. It was an emotional rollercoaster. You may want to keep some tissues handy because it does not shy away from the heartbreaking realities of Alaskan crab fishermen. The boat and the Bering Sea felt like characters in their own right. Treating place as a character is something you can count on from a Thea Verdone book! The vivid descriptions will make it feel like you’re on the boat with the crew of the Briar Anteros.

Relationship-in-crisis isn’t a trope I read often, but when done right, it packs such an emotional punch. We didn’t get to spend much time with Cole and Morgan before the event that caused their marriage to crumble, but the bits we did see made it clear that they were very much in love. Even after things went wrong, lack of love was never the issue. It was a mountain of grief and guilt that came between them.
It broke my heart to see how broken things got. I don’t blame Cole for doing what he did, even if I wish he hadn’t pushed Morgan away. I understood why he thought the way he did; what he’d been through and what he lost was horrible. But he hadn’t factored in that Morgan had gone through something equally as horrible. It hurt to see Morgan forced to face their new reality alone. But I loved that he never stopped fighting for Cole. Even when things seemed hopeless, he never gave up (he might have claimed he did, but it was clear he hadn’t). Seeing these two face their demons and find their way back to each other was such a rewarding experience.
I also loved the found family aspect. Everyone on the Briar lost something that fateful day, and seeing how the events affected the crew was done so well. I want to say more, but I don’t want to spoil anything. All I will say is that I fell in love with this group of characters and look forward to returning to the Bering Sea as the series continues!
